Tile Installation FAQs

What are the differences between porcelain and ceramic tiles?
Porcelain is usually manufactured from white clay rather than red clay and is fired at a hotter temperature, resulting in a denser product. It is less absorbent than ceramic and more chip resistant. Porcelain is more difficult to cut than ceramic tiles. In most applications, ceramic tiles are a good product for interior walls, but porcelain is a more durable choice for floors and outdoor projects.
What does "rectified" mean?
"Rectified" refers to a tile that has been cut mechanically after firing so that each tile is exactly the same size. In nominal sizing, the tile shrinks somewhat during firing, resulting in minor variations in size. The main advantage of a rectified tile is that a thinner grout joint can be used.
What are the differences between man-made tiles and natural stone?
Natural stone is beautiful and unique, but it requires more care than porcelain or ceramic tiles. Natural stones are more porous, so they may scratch and stain more easily. Stone needs to be sealed regularly and cleaned with a pH-balanced product to avoid damage. Many of the new "high-definition image" porcelains are very realistic and are nearly undetectable as faux stone.
